Afghanistan umpire Bismillah Jan Shinwari passed away in a roadside blast which took place on Saturday in the country’s Nangarhar province. The 36-year-old had officiated in the 2017 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day and the 2017–18 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day tournaments in Afghanistan. He also had stood in multiple international matches.

At least 15 people reportedly lost their lives in the blast and over 40 were left wounded at the site. Interestingly, Afghanistan stalwart and current No.1 T20I bowler Rashid Khan also belongs to the same district. Rashid was born in Nangarhar which lies in the eastern part of Afghanistan.

It was a car bomb suicide blast that happened near the district governor’s compound in Ghanikhil district in the eastern province of Nangarhar. The governor’s spokesperson confirmed the casualties and also revealed that a few gunmen tried to enter the governer’s compound. They, however, were killed by the security forces. Their motive was to enter the governer’s premises after conducting the blast.

Shinwari’s several family members also breathed their last

Talking about Shinwari’s career, he had stood in 6 One-day Internationals and as many T20 Internationals. His first international match as an umpire was a T20I encounter between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe on 5th February. Six days later, he officiated in his first One-day International, which again was between the same two teams.

According to reports, the blast occurred around 12:20 pm in the afternoon. No terrorist organization has so far taken the responsibility of this blast. Initial reports suggested that Shinwari was there at the location of the blast but he had survived. But it was later confirmed that the 36-year-old lost his life in the blast. Along with Shinwari, his cousin, two of her children, and his nephew also passed away.

“Shocking news. Seven members of @ACBofficials elite Umpire #BismillahJanShinwari who officiated in many international matches has martyred in a roadside bomb blast today in Shinwari district of Nangarhar.
The world T20 No 1 bowler Rashid Khan too belong to that district too,” reported M.Ibrahim.

Afghanistan cricket has been struck with two blows in a span of two days. 29-year-old Najeeb Tarakai, their opening batsman, was severely injured in a car accident on Friday and is currently under treatment.
